Antonio Caldara (1670 - 1736): Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo (1713)

  • Finally, one of the many significant Italian composers of the Baroque era should be mentioned: Antonio Caldara, born in Venice and died in Vienna, where he spent the longest time as Vice Kapellmeister at the imperial court under the equally famous Johann Joseph Fux. Here, the oratorio “Maddalena …” is highlighted, available on YouTube: Caldara: Maddalena ai piedi di Christo, YouTube playlist, consisting of 59 individually selectable tracks, a recording from the double CD of 1996 on Harmonia Mundi with the Orchestra of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis conducted by René Jacobs - as a promising basis - and splendid vocal soloists: Maria Cristina Kiehr, Rosa Dominguez, Andreas Scholl, Bernanda Fink, Gerd Türk, and Ulrich Messthaler. While not particularly suitable as a theater piece, the music, in almost uninterrupted alternation between recitative and aria, offers the opportunity to present one hit after another, mixed in terms of cast, rhythm, and mood.
